Tell us a bit about yourself…

Kerwin Blackburn is an upcoming UK artist specialising in Jackson Pollock-inspired action painted pieces and unique portraits of pop culture icons – with a focus on those from the world of music.

With a love of the action and movement captured within his acrylic paintings, his hand-drawn and hand-painted artwork is all about colour, creativity and positive energy. Layers of splattered and dripped paint appear suspended timelessly, creating striking interactions of colour and texture, achieving balance through the use of negative spaces and contrasts.

Having launched his art brand, ‘By Kerwin’, in late 2019 he has adopted an e-commerce business model over the last couple of years, and despite the challenges facing the arts sector he has managed to organise his own debut solo exhibitions in his hometown Norwich, as well as making two appearances at Saatchi Art’s The Other Art Fair in London in 2021, alongside exhibiting at the Barbican Centre. BOXPARK Shoreditch is his first solo London show.

Having excelled at painting since a young age, his first venture into the art world saw him establish his first company, Kerwin Art Collections Ltd, in 2012 at the age of 18. Kerwin does not come from a conventional art background however – rather than fine art he has degrees in BSc International Business, Finance & Economics from the University of Manchester and a Master’s degree in international development from King’s College London.

He has also spent over a year working at an e-commerce start-up in Singapore, and he has used his practical skills and experiences and commercial awareness to develop his artwork and grow his brand, By Kerwin.

What can we expect from your stay at Boxpark Shoreditch?

My stay at BOXPARK will be packed full of colour and creativity – I’ll be filling my unit with my original acrylic portrait action paintings, as well as prints of some of those I’ve already sold which include Stevie Wonder, Blondie and Tupac – which fittingly was bought by a collector in Los Angeles earlier in the year.

I’ll also be playing my exciting Behind The Scenes timelapse painting videos which were produced over the various lockdowns while everything was online only – but which are now such a helpful dimension to have to draw visitors in and show how my paintings were created.

My range of merchandise will also be on display – including mugs, cushions and new clothing range.I’ll also have some prints for sale in the shop – with the full range available to purchase on my website www.bykerwin.com. I’ll be there all week too so I look forward to meeting many new visitors during my stay!
