Norfolk Wire: Local Artist Returns Home With New Exhibition

Norfolk Artist Returns Home With New Exhibition

Norwich-born artist Kerwin Blackburn will open his exhibition, Lights, Canvas, Action: Homecoming, at the Crypt Gallery at Norwich School on 23 February. Free to enter, the exhibition showcases an extensive collection of Jackson Pollock-inspired portraits featuring iconic figures from music and popular culture.

The exhibition is open Monday to Friday from 10am to 5pm and 10am to 4pm every Saturday until 11 March 2022. Southwold brewer and distiller, Adnams is also sponsoring a private, invitation-only viewing event on 24 February.

The former Norwich School student now lives in London but has returned to share examples of his best-loved and latest work with his home city. Lights, Canvas, Action III: Homecoming is the third in this series of Norwich exhibitions, housed in the 700-year-old crypt, this is the oldest venue his work has been displayed in.

His positive energy and love of movement is captured in vibrant acrylic paintings in a unique pop art style he describes as “action painting”. Original portraits of The Beatles, Diana Ross, Twiggy, David Bowie, Prince and many more feature in the collection. A selection of prints will be available to purchase at the gallery and further prints and other merchandise are for sale online.

Kerwin’s Background

Kerwin has used his commercial and business background, including a year’s experience working at an e-commerce company in Singapore, to create the brand By Kerwin. ByKerwin.com sells original artwork as well as prints and other merchandise including mugs, cushions and clothing.

He is also keen to help budding artists and students make their creativity commercially viable, so will be available at the exhibition to chat to visitors about running a successful art business.

Artist Kerwin Blackburn comments: “After a number of events in London, exhibiting in my home city, in the very school that led me to become an artist and business owner, truly feels like a homecoming. I can’t wait to bring my own, very contemporary, representation of current cultural icons into the Crypt’s historic surroundings – breaking down any perceptions people may have that the art industry must be stuffy and archaic.

“I strive to make great art accessible and to make it easy for everyone, even if they don’t come from an artistic background, to love and own art. It’s the reason I set up ByKerwin.com and also why I love exhibiting my work in central locations that are open to all.”
